Playing golf strategically

Updated: Oct 5, 2023

I was amazed as I played golf through the years to learn how much my score could be affected by my decisions as much or more than by my swing. I've saved a lot of rounds when I wasn't playing very well by making good course strategy decisions.

Here are some ideas to think about the next time you tee it up that will help you shoot your best round!

Golf like chess requires strategy.

Assessment and Planning:

• Know Your Game: Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses in terms of distance, accuracy, and shot shapes.

• Study the Hole: Analyze the layout, hazards, doglegs, and potential trouble spots on the hole.

• Identify Risk-Reward: Decide if it’s worth taking risks for potential rewards or if a safer approach is smarter.

Off the Tee:

• Club Selection: Choose a club that ensures you can comfortably land your tee shot in the fairway, avoiding hazards.

• Positioning: Aim for the part of the fairway that offers the best angle for your next shot.

• Consider Layup: If the hole is challenging, consider laying up with a club that leaves you with a comfortable distance for your approach shot.

Approach Shot:

• Distance Control: Select a club that gives you a yardage you’re confident with for consistent approach shots.

• Avoid Hazards: Aim for the safer part of the green or fairway, even if it means a longer approach shot.

• Pin Placement: Consider where the pin is located on the green and aim to leave yourself an uphill putt if possible.

Around the Green:

• Short Game: Assess your strengths in chipping, pitching, and bunker play to decide on your strategy.

• Green Reading: Analyze the slope and breaks on the green to help plan your putt.

• Play Smart: Sometimes it’s better to aim for the middle of the green and two-putt rather than going for a risky pin and ending up with a difficult putt.

Putting:

• Speed Control: Focus on getting the speed right to give yourself the best chance at sinking putts.

• Aim Point: Pick a spot where you want the ball to roll over and visualize the line.

• Stay Confident: Believe in your read and stroke to make consistent putts.

Mindset and Adaptation:

• Stay Patient: Golf requires patience; don’t get frustrated by mistakes.

• Adapt to Conditions: Adjust your strategy based on factors like wind, weather, and course conditions.

• Play Within Your Limits: Avoid attempting shots that you’re not comfortable executing consistently.

Remember, golf course management takes practice and experience. Over time, you’ll develop a better sense of when to be aggressive and when to play it safe based on your own abilities and the challenges of the course.
