Pre-Shot Routine: a key to consistency and confidence

A pre-shot routine is a golfer’s secret to unlocking consistency and improving performance on the course. Firstly, it provides a mental anchor, allowing players to transition from distractions and external pressures to a focused and present state of mind. By stepping into a routine, golfers can establish a rhythm and channel their attention towards the task at hand—aligning their body, visualizing the shot, and instilling confidence.





This mental preparation helps reduce anxiety and build self-assurance, leading to a more controlled and efficient swing when it counts. Moreover, a pre-shot routine instills discipline and structure in a golfer’s approach. It acts as a blueprint, ensuring that essential steps, such as target selection, alignment, and grip, are consistently followed. This consistency helps minimize errors and erratic swings, promoting a more repeatable and reliable performance. Over time, this disciplined approach cultivates a sense of familiarity and comfort, providing a stable foundation for the golfer to rely upon during each shot.

This is a good example of a pre-shot routine:



1. Stand Behind the Ball: Begin by standing behind the ball, aligning yourself with the target. Take a few deep breaths to center your

focus and clear your mind.


2. Select Your Target: Choose a specific target or spot you want to aim for, such as a tree or bunker, to help focus your shot.


3. Pick an intermediate target a few feet in front of your ball in line with the distant target.


4. Address the Ball: Walk up to the ball and take your stance, aligning your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel with the line from your ball to the intermediate target. Place the clubface behind the ball, aligning it as well.


5. Visualize the Shot: Envision the desired flight and landing of the ball.


6. Grip: Grip the club comfortably, ensuring a secure yet relaxed hold.


7. Deep Breath and Focus: Take one more deep breath to calm your nerves and narrow your focus to the shot at hand.


8. Final Glance at Target: Look once more at your target, reinforcing your aim and building confidence in your chosen path.


9. Smooth Swing Thought: Maintain a simple swing thought, such as “smooth tempo” or “balanced follow-through,” to guide your swing.


10. Execute the Shot: Trust your preparation and swing smoothly, focusing on the process rather than the outcome.


11. Reflect and Reset: Regardless of the outcome, reflect on the shot objectively and learn from it. Use this feedback to adjust your pre-shot routine for the next shot and maintain a positive, composed mindset.



There are as many ways to do this as there are golfers. A pre-shot routine calms your nerves and aligns your thinking. Start simply and build your own to improve your scores and fun on the course!
